On Sunday, Senator Marco Rubio, R-Fla., appeared on FACEtheNATION, criticizing President Barack Obama for not producing a plan for a potential second term. Two days later, President Obama lifted a glossy-covered pamphlet while speaking at a campaign rally in Delray, Florida. On it’s pages, the president’s A Plan For Jobs that covers a range of policy priorities.
Team Obama will be distributing over 3 million copies is in-conjunction with ad running in key battleground states — Colorado, Florida, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia, and Wisconsin. In the ad, Obama makes an appeal:
“So read my plan, compare it to Governor Romney’s and decide which is better for you..
It’s an honor to be your president, and I’m asking for your vote.
So together we can keep moving America forward…There’s just no quit on America,”
Critics of the plan argue that Obama is simply repacking his 2008 Blueprint For Change, and is thus is short of new ideas. Romney campaign spokesperson Ryan Williams questions the efficacy of this plan given the timing of its release. Williams conveyed to The Hill news organization:
“A glossy pamphlet two weeks before an election is no substitute for a real agenda for America.
Instead of offering a plan to get our economy back on track and create new jobs,
President Obama is offering more tax increases, more spending, more debt, and fewer jobs,”
Amanda Henneberg, a spokesperson for the Romney campaign, suggests that the 2012 plan suffers from directions that have already failed:
“The president is just doubling down on the same policies that have led to a stagnant economy,
greater government dependency and trillion-dollar deficits,.
Henneberg further asserts that Romney’s Plan for a Stronger Middle Class will result in economy recovery for our nation as well as reduce poverty by stimulating 12 million jobs.
David Axelrod, a senior campaign adviser for Obama, responded to criticisms by noting that the plan, in written form, is consistent with the direction Obama has been outlining for months.
If indeed the pamphlet is designed as a tool to make Obama’s plan more accessible, then the release is perfectly reasonable. If, however, the plan is a reconstitution of Obama’s prior positions or if it contains additional details, the American public would have been done a great disservice since Obama and Romney will not meet again in a debate forum.
