There are very few things that really upset me these days. For instance, I hate war. I hate false nationalistic myths such as “America is a nation of immigrants“. I hate political parties that pimp grassroots constituents on the left and the right, while doing the bidding of powerful elites. And I hate influential voices that use their access to malign the vulnerable.
Today, those voices are disparaging a man who, by any objective measure, deserves the honor of a king.
Many of us will die, leaving behind accolades in academia, professions, etc. But few will have left that defining moment when our actions literally saved a life that was in eminent danger. And far fewer, are those whose defining moment saved multiple lives.
Charles Ramsey of Cleveland, Ohio is among a very select few whose life is directly connected with saving lives and restoring many from hopelessness. His daring efforts to enter a fortified house and ultimately assist the removal of Amanda Berry, Berry’s 6-year-old daughter, Gina DeJesus, and Michelle Knight from the neighboring home of Ariel Castro and his brothers will certainly be the topic of movie, books, articles, and interviews.
While Ramsey’s act of courage should have been hailed as a model for our defining moments, some prunes in the British tabloids were making a mockery of Ramsey’s speech. Now comes US media outlets with little else to do, than to tinker around in Ramsey’s past brushes with the law.
Newsflash to the suits who would disparage Ramsey, many of whom would not have taken his bold actions, “I Don’t Give A Damn”!
Those twisted individuals who turn into fodder even the most virtuous reminders that America has some reason to hope for more humane times — to you, people of good would rather you take the paper on which whatever reports you have found, set it to flame, and sit your pompous rear ends on it if you need a hot story. This kind of silliness acts as if, young ladies who were stolen from their families, held against their wills, and raped repeatedly had dispatched a request that rescuers meet some packaged character profile. Ramsey saved lives. Period.
Are we so cynical to ignore that in the counsel of God, one would be ordained for such a time as this to be the intercessor to ultimately free desperate people he did not know? How many might have hinted over the decade that something might be wrong without following their inclinations? And how many would have approached that house, fully aware that lead — whether from a 9-millimeter, 357, or semi-automatic rifle — might have been waiting on the other side?
Amazingly, that it would occur at this time. In this place. During the NBA Finals where athletes are showcased as society’s more adored before young [black] men, 99 percent of whom will never see the professional courts they so desire. Think it not strange that it occurred in Cleveland from where the king of those courts ascended to this throne? Think it not strange that in a time when society elevates men whose lifestyles present confusing images of manhood? It is at this time and in this place that one risked his life as a demonstration of real manhood after which we can all model.
A hard-working man. A Christian who identifies with America as opposed to rejecting her. A man from a much maligned population segment in a city once referred to as “The Mistake on The Lake“. An individual who might need extra dollars, but without pause suggested that the rescued victims receive the reward money.
So what, that Ramsey speaks a brand of English that is strange to the British. I find it even stranger to bow to an individual who, because of her lineage, is given some higher human value. Or to idolize a man walking around in a checkered wool skirt. Indeed, a world of self-absorbed Wall Street sharks need periodic reminders of genuine love of God and humanity.
Ramsey’s quirky presence is like an angel tripping out of Heaven and landing in middle America.
I am not concerned about Ramsey’s past. But I am most intrigued by the man he is today. Perhaps it took this man to do what most of us might have failed to do. God looked upon us all. He answered prayers. And that answer showed up in the person of Charles Ramsey. Haircut needed. Perhaps a little dental work needed. And English usage unlike the Tinsel Town models who only play heroes.
Maybe the four in that mysterious house were not the only persons saved. It is very possible that a God who works mysteriously desired to save Charles Ramsey from the regrets of his past. And in the stings that can come when someone touches our sensitive places, I pray Ramsey recognizes that the vast majority of people of goodwill are not concerned about the darn reports of his past.
I, for one, choose to believe God’s report. And for the good of this nation and ourselves, I hope you choose it as well.
Wherever you are Charles Ramsey, God bless you Bro!
