12 Ways to Save Money on Back-to-School Items

According to the National Retail Federation’s annual survey, American families will spend an average of $670 on this year’s back-to-school supplies, clothing, electronics, and shoes. The estimated $74.9 billion figure that includes back-to-school spending for K-12 and college is up 5 percent from last year. But consumers can take a number of actions to reduce the dent in their wallets and purses. Here are 12 ways to moderate spending: 

1)  Tax-Free Weekend Shopping.

Residents in 16 states can take advantage of weekends when items such as school supplies, backpacks, and clothing are sold tax-free. A number of states have hosted tax-free days for 2014, but Summer 2015 will soon be upon us. It’s not too late for this year if you live in Connecticut, Maryland, and Texas. States, qualifying items, and current tax-free spending limits are as follows: 

  • Alabama               Aug 1-3: Books ($30), Clothing ($100), Computers ($750), School Supplies ($50)
  • Arkansas              Aug 2-3: Clothing ($100), School Supplies
  • Connecticut          Aug 17-23: Clothing and Footwear ($300)
  • Florida                   Aug 1-3: Clothing ($100), Computers ($750), School Supplies ($15)
  • Georgia                 Aug 1-2: Clothing ($100), Computers ($1,000), School Supplies ($20)
  • Iowa                       Aug 1-2: Clothing ($100)
  • Louisiana            .Aug 1-2: All Tangible Personal Property ($2,500).
  • Maryland               Aug 10-16: Clothing and Footwear ($100)
  • Mississippi          Jul 25-26: Clothing and Footwear ($100)
  • Missouri               Aug 1-3: Clothing ($100), Computers ($3,500), School Supplies ($50)
