Autism, Love, and a Film that Presents the Challenges (Video Documentary)

Says Persian poet and scholar Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Rūmī (known simply as “Rumi”), “Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.” This short passage is one of the many insights shared in Autism In Love, an Independent Lens film airing on the Public Broadcasting Station [PBS]

ABOUT AUTISM IN LOVE …

About this film, the producer summarizes:

Finding love can be hard enough for anyone, but for those with an autism spectrum disorder, the challenges may seem overwhelming. The disorder can jeopardize the core characteristics of a successful relationship — communication and social interaction. Filmed in a highly personal style, Matt Fuller’s Autism in Love offers a warm and stereotype-shattering look at four people as they pursue and manage romantic relationships.

Autism In Love provides you an opportunity to gain an invaluable understanding about one of today’s most perplexing and least understood mental disorders. Equally important, scenes in this film challenge the viewer to consider how precious love is to attain and sustain. Suffice to say that you will find in Autism In Love, people that could teach the world lessons about enduring painful realities, acceptance, hope, and yes, love.

Please watch and leave comments below. Let’s have a conversation about how this film has reshaped your attitudes relationships and what we as a society can do to help individuals that live with the daily realities of autism. And please share this post with others and in groups.

Having watched Autism In Love, I was particularly touched. Don’t be surprised if a tear of compassion find themselves running down your cheeks.
