HONOR MOMS AS WE APPROACH MOTHERS DAY…

Like yours, my mom taught her children to look for ways to serve others. She is currently and courageously battling a serious illness. And yet, even now the spirit of serving is alive. So, in honor of my mom, this is a courtesy project and tribute to all the great women around the world! Mothers, grandmothers, surrogate mothers, each making a difference in ways public and private. This is a part of a larger effort to promote family and healthy relationships. Other groups and galleries are such as HONOR DADS, HONOR SIBLINGS, HONOR MENTORS, HONOR THE GROWING-UP YEARS, etc.

TRIBUTE:

"Mama, because you were...I am" - I pay tribute and honor to my Mom, Ella Mae Fuller Hopgood, who passed away nine (9) years ago on April 6, 2004, but who will always be alive in my heart. I had one of those good Mama's! (Somebody knows what I'm talking about!) She was good not only to her husband and her own children, but to everyone she met. She was the great encourager who always had an uplifting word for anyone. She always pushed us to strive to be our best and not to sink to the bottom of anything! Mom believed in Excellence and she demonstrated it in everything she did. There is much I could say about my mother, but suffice it to say,I feel richly blessed that God gifted me with a mother who cared and who taught me everything I needed to know while she was here....I miss her now, but the truth is, I know exactly what she'd say or do regarding any situation I might face, because she taught me all she could for the 47 years that I was privileged to have her as my Mom! I look forward to the great reunion..over in glory!"

My mother reared me as a single mom. She was a Med Tech but still with me in two and 2 teenager sons, continued her education to provide the best life possible for her boys. Despite funds being low most of the time, she found a way to send me to the best possible schools and we vacationed in many educational spots around the US. I guess I can say she wanted me well rounded. She's a pillar of the community. A devout Christian. She tends to her ailing brother and still goes to the gym daily at the age of 87 years. Oh yes, mom is a bio-activist!

Today's her birthday and I'd like to honor my mother for being the best. (strictness and all).

With Mother's Day coming up I wanted to take a moment to honor Cheryl Jones! She is an exceptional woman I am honored to know. Way back when she taught me something I carry with me to this day and for that I will always be grateful. What did she teach me you wonder? She taught me that because our children shared a father they were siblings. And that whatever might or might not have been with their father we needed to set that ish aside and get along. We shared many phone conversations about our boys and she was such a MOTHER that she would keep my son for weeks at a time in the summer and on weekends so he could grow up knowing his brother. It's funny when your child will listen to another woman when they won't listen to you but I was not mad at her then and I'm not mad at her now. She taught my child what family is all about in a way I could not. I never worried about him when he was with her, she made him do housework just like her sons. She made him mind his manners and man up because she did that old school raising! I admire her so much for that and always have. Cheryl is a take no stuff, speak the truth woman and I am honored to know her and call her friend! Happy Mother's Day to you Cheryl Jones! Thank you for all you did, said & shared! When I say I love you I mean it from the bottom of my heart! May your day be wonderful and full of the love you deserve!!

2013 YWCA Career Women of Achievement Honoree Dinner

As a child, I watched my mother do her homework and eventually, she earned her college degree. I then watched her work two jobs so that we could live in a suburban neighborhood with “good schools” and wear “good quality” clothes.

As a teenager, I watched my mom learn the zip code schemes of Philadelphia and practice lifting a 70 lb. bag so that she could be considered for a temporary position at the Post Office that “could” lead to permanent employment. Once she was granted a full-time job, my mom worked first shift, second shift, third shift, split off days and no off days to pursue her career.

As I prepared to leave for college, I watched my mother wipe out her entire savings to pay my tuition and max her credit cards so that I would have all of the supplies on the “College Freshman Supplies List.”

When I started my first job, I realized that my mother delayed her education, forfeited her YP years and derailed her career so that I could pursue my dreams of higher education and a successful career in business. From that day forward, I promised myself that I would never take my mother’s sacrifices for granted and that I would always strive to be an outstanding businesswoman, community leader and charitable giver.

At 43 years old, I am being honored for the successes in my career and my contributions to this community. Momma, I thank you for the many sacrifices that you have made in your life to ensure that my life is filled with opportunities. This 2013 YWCA Career Woman of Achievement Award is for you!

(Delivered at the YWCA Career Women of Achievement Honoree Reception on 9 May 2013.)

My mom was a single parent when I was 6 months old and my brother was 15 months old. She was a dedicated mom. She was a hard working woman. She was 18 years old at the time. We lived in Addyston, Ohio until 1954. She took us to Sunday School, BTU and evening service, every Sunday. When we moved to Cincinnati, she went to Taft Night School to get her high school diploma. She was her class's valedictorian and received a scholarship to the University of Cincinnati. She instilled the same work ethic in both me and my brother. Her life's foundation was God first, family second and everything else came after that. She was a true and loyal friend. She loved her church, Bethlehem Baptist Church. She was a faithful member for 57 years. When her health failed, she had to give up her position of Chairperson of the Trustee Board. She kept the faith, she finished the race. On January 19, 2013, the Lord softly called her name and she answered. Now, she is resting in the arms of our Lord. She had a good life and I knew she had to go, but it hurt so much when she left. I'll always love you mama and you will always be in my heart. Oh, the joy of that day, when we meet again. Your loving daughter.

The person I call "Big Sis" has had an incredible influence on my life. During my childhood, Sis was placed in-charge when mom and dad were not home. And for sometimes rambunctious brothers, she would get out instructions on household chores, make great dinners at a young age, and report back to our parents if the boys did not cooperate.

Maxine has a heart for the Lord. I am so grateful when I hear her sing solos in church. "I'm Walking With the King" is one of my favorites. Her singing "Great Is Thy Faithfulness" at dad's homegoing services remains with me today. Our private conversations on matters of faith, when life presents challenges, those are the most endearing.

Sis is a wonderful educator. She has received Masters and Bachelors degrees. And after moving from corporate, she returned to education. She now teaches chemistry and biology, and will be assuming the chair at her school's science department in 2013-14. Young minds have a caring teacher in my Sis.

I thank Sis for everything you do in our care for mom's affairs. The things that no one sees like regularly washing clothes and attending care conferences. Our mom has a great daughter. And for Jordan, you are simply awesome. Young men coming along today face a number of tests as they transition to manhood. You have been faithful.

Finally, Sis, born a Gemini. I know your life's yearning has been to know your twin sister who died at an early age. I thank the Lord that you will see her again in Heaven. And that for everything you have meant to others, you will one day be able to embrace the one person you've missed all these years.

I love you, great Mother, Daughter, Sister, Friend, and Lover of the Lord.

I'm so thankful that my mother is still here in the land of the living. I thank her for her patience, wisdom, discipline, and strength. I will forever cherish the memories of mom waking me and my four siblings up on Saturday mornings, getting out the Murphy's soap and washing walls, pine sol, bleach, cleaning e'rything in that house, taking a break while she got on the dining room table and pretended to be Diana Ross while my sisters and I lip synced background vocals...or she would be Gladys Knight and my brothers would be the Pips. After the house was clean she would go outside and play kickball, dodgeball, hopscotch, mother may I, redlight/greenlight, hide and go seek and any other game we subjected her to. She made sure we knew she loved us and that we were/are her world. In the words of The Intruders..."I' ll always love my momma".

As the years speak to the minutes, I grow a deeper appreciation for the mom God has given me.

Mom brought order to a hectic household of active children and a hard-working dad. Our dinner table was like a track meet of 1000 conversations. It would bring so much joy to mom. I can the smiles in my mind's eye. And mom brought a quiet calm during the sad times. The [tragic and untimely] losses of loved ones (e.g., 5 dead in one car crash). Accidents/serious injuries (e.g., Shawn breaking his neck in 3 places). A fire that could have ruined our home. When I see Maxine, I often think of the loss of her twin sister and how mom so endured the loss.

What I’ve come to know of the Lord, came largely through mom. Dad taught us through his love of biblical prophecy. Mom taught us simply by being mom. I never saw her smoke. Never even a sip of alcohol. With as many people as she interacted with on a daily basis, never a curse word. In an extended family of singers, mom is not the most talented (hehe). But none are more treasured in heaven for the genuine love of Christ as she.

I still remember the fall Sunday in 1968 when mom and dad, my siblings, a handful of relatives, and I walked the streets of Silverton and Kennedy Heights, passing out brochures that announced the Grand Opening of Glamour Girl Beauty Salon [GGBS]. It remained in the community for 40 years, thanks to family generations that supported the business. Through that experience, I saw how mom interacted kindly with the people who became her extended family. She loves them and still thinks of people well after retiring.

The most important picture I've taken was during the last moments of dad’s life. Mom was sleeping next to dad. I quietly entered the room and photographed what I call “Till Death Us Do Part”. It's my lasting thought on their marriage, and indeed mom’s commitment.

A few years ago, I experienced a series of challenges. Mom showed me how to love “in spite of” - a lesson not all receive and one I hope never to forget. Now mom is facing a battle in her life - Alzheimer’s Disease. This struggle has revealed another depth of faith. Still teaching, even now.Life is about laughter and tears. I'm thankful for a mom who demonstrates how to meet treat them both just the same.

I keep this picture of my Mom at my desk and with this being Mother's Day weekend I took a moment to read the words that my family put in our hometown newspaper marking the one year anniversary of her homegoing. While looking at her photo, I thought about a comment my wife made several days ago while observing me walk towards our car. When I got to the car, she was like I never noticed it before but looking at you today all I could see was your Mama. I kind of laughed it off but it meant a lot to me and every day I feel like she is with me and I hope that I'm not letting her down. Missing you Mom, but thanking God I had you for 45 of the best years of my life.
